The Debian notes say to use apt-get for the upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze.  
(And this from a died-in-the-woll aptitude user.)

And you need to update udev as well as the kernel before doing the rest of the 
upgrade.

Mind you, I have not done it!  I shall use a fresh install to ensure that I do 
not get given KDE4 stuff willy nilly.

And not for a week or two. ;-)
