No, this behaviour is not hardcoded.  I have Iceweasel, my husband 
Google Chrome, as our default browser in KMail.  I love Konqueror and 
would myself use it from choice, but It has one crucial failing.  I 
cannot ask it to display with no style. :-( I must do a wish-bug some 
time!

I used KControl -> KDE Components -> File associations.

But it sounds as though that is what you have done, and it has not 
been successful.  So all I can say is to reiterate that Konqueror is 
not hardcoded.  Sorry. :-(
