actually, it's the cursor -- the curser is what *you* become when it 
happens!

i've encountered this also, on several versions and in several 
distributions. in my case, it is the result of switching between a serial 
pointing device, where it was never a problem, to a USB one, where it 
sometimes is. i've not found it to be application-dependent, though.
