Dan have you tried to remove (purge) and reinstall NetworkManager? Perhaps when you mixed wheezy and squeze packages (as you mentioned), the icon was overwritten. Removing those changes would not restore the original icon, but if that was the problem, reinstalling NM may fix it. Cheers Michele
