Thanks, Marc.  That's what I did that isn't working.  

If this were package foo I would do:
# aptitude purge foo && aptitude install foo

but I'm worried about the mail and addresses etc.  And if the problem is in 
the configuration files, backing them up and reinstalling them would just put 
me back where I am.  Still, I think I'd better try it.  Perhaps after:

#aptitude reinstall kmail-trinity

and hope!
