well, actually, it came back with LOTS, and LOTS of files, including these:
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/input/synaptics_drv.so
/usr/sbin/se_synaptic
/usr/sbin/synaptic
/usr/share/synaptic
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf
/usr/share/app-install/desktop/synaptic.desktop

if it wasn't found, it would give back this error:
# /usr/sbin/synaptic
Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key
(synaptic:6768): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :1.0
