"display" shows amarok_rocks.jpg here without problems (R14.0.0). There has to 
be a difference in settings. Just a shot into the dark: Can you have a look in 
Settings>Appearance&Themes>Colors
if you have checked or un-checked "Apply colors to non-TDE applications"? Mine 
is un-checked.
