The logic is that someone might have headphones on or a loudspeaker turned up 
high and get deafened when/if sound came on unexpectedly loudly during an 
intall, so it is safe to leave people to turn the sound on knowingly.  Don't 
shoot the messenger. ;-)

Sometimes unmuting in KMixer is enough. 

The easiest way to sort it is with pavucontrol, but that means installing 
pulesaudio. <dons flameproof suti> ;-)
