I didn't know that there was a spell-checker in KWrite!  In KMail 1.9.10 on 
3.5.13.2:
In composer:
Options: automatic spell-checking
Settings: click on spell-checker

And check the setting in Control Center -> KDE components -> spell checker

If you have already done all that, and spell checking still doesn't work, I'm 
stuck.  Sorry. :-(
