I'd love to Nik, but when I went back to the screen kmail _was_ running 
on, it was blanked out.  And I have no clue how to go about ascertaining 
which message was the killer, so once I was running again, I grep'ed 
that directory and nuked the last 4 messages from that person before I 
re-ran kmail again. Then it ran normally, otherwise it would have 
segfaulted & refused to run.
