Also, the mouse sensitivity was way down.

I just noticed after a reboot that the changes I had made to a 
previously open session (before these problems started) weren't saved.

I do recall that I suspended to ram when I last had the laptop on, could 
that be a factor?

It's a Samsung RF711 S07UK i7 laptop, if that helps.
