that's what I'm going to do. Targeting emu10k2 cards (see below).

However the adapter pci-e to pci adapter (Nick suggested) is useful in another 
experiment. 

As for the card, I'm buying this one

I'll make me own connection breakout box. According to user reviews, it's 
linux compatible. It uses the emu10k2 driver so for $43 US, I'll give it a 
go.

If anyone finds any definitive problems with this card, please let me know.

Thanks to everyone for all the input. I feel better giving the above card a 
go.

I'll report back, in detail, my results.

Maybe we should start a dbase of all our hardware, what works, worked and 
didn't. It could be helpful to others.
