If it doesn't start automatically, run it from the menu.  Then go to
Configure / General Settings / Miscellaneous, and make sure "starts
automatically" is checked.

If your battery is draining that much faster than with Windows, you may also
need to install cpufrequtils.  That should enable frequency scaling.  To
save even more power, you can use the "conservative" governor, and maybe
limit maximum CPU speed to one or two steps below the CPU's maximum.
